      Picture a comic strip...

Scene 1: a girl is walking down an icy street with a full cup of
coffee in one hand and her iPhone in the other.

Scene 2: (close up) She looks down at her iphone, distracted
momentarily by which song she's going to play next.

Scene 3: (close up on her feet) Her right foot lands on a patch of
black ice and 'whooshhh' slips from under her.

Scene 4: (wide shot) Her foot is in the air, she tips backward, hand
flies back, coffee cup goes flying. Coffee everywhere.

Scene 5: (close up on her face) A look of shock and panic. She doesn't
      want to drop her iPhone.

Scene 6: (wide shot) She lands on her butt 'oooommphh' and swears a
      lot '$#%^*'!!!...

Scene 7: (close up on her hand) The back of her hand then hits the icy
pavement. The iPhone scrapes a little on the ground but remains
      tightly in her grip. Saved.

Scene 8: (close up on face) A look of pain, yet triumph.

      The end.

I'm not proud of this shot, but wanted to do a bit of a before and
after. This is my (messy) apartment on Saturday morning. Tomorrow is
moving day which means I am packing up everything today.

Initially I was planning to pack during the week and move this morning
but quickly realized that wasn't going to happen. Between going out
for drinks, running general errands and sheer procrastination, there
      was just no hope.

So now it's 9:30am on Saturday morning. I'm about to run down to my
local starbucks to load myself with a huge cup of syrupy coffee and
then it's time to get this show on the road.

Will post another update later. Hopefully in a few hours you'll be
able to see some progress. I'm also hoping I'll find my digital camera
(my little one) as it's been missing now for a few months...

      Cravings for roast beef

This coming weekend will mark the end of my time on New York's Upper
East Side. I'm moving downtown to the East Village which is a little
cooler, a little trendier and just closer to all the places I like to
      hang out.

So to prepare, tonight I visited my favorite local sandwich place,
"Five Star Deli" on 86th and 1st ave, for one last tasty sandwich.
I've been visiting this place pretty much once a week for the past
year and always order the same thing - hot roast beef on a roll, with
lettuce, tomato, American cheese, mayonnaise, with a sprinkling of
black pepper and half a pickle on the side. They chuck it all on a
grill and melt the cheese, lightly toast the bread and heat the roast
beef. Hmmm it's delicious and also makes great hangover food.

At 6 bucks a sandwich and roughly one a week, this place is going to
feel it when their most valuable customer leaves. Oh you should know
although it's called a "Five Star Deli" it really is just a little
corner/convenience store which happens to have a deli inside. In fact
I totally overlooked it in the first instance and only stumbled upon
it one night when it was really late and nothing else was open.

Anyhow, it was sad saying goodbye to my weekly roast beef sandwich and the staff who know me and my order so well - I'd always be greeted
with "hey, hey, same thing?" - but I'm excited to be moving downtown
and discovering new places to buy my roast beef.

      New years resolutions

6 days into the new year and I've had some time to think things through. As I sit here nursing a cold ale (yes I've switched from lager to ale, a little more sophisticated, no?) I've decided that 2009 is going to be a good year, a year of change (ok so I shamelessly stole that from Obama, but what the heck it's a great ideology. I'm not going to start a discussion on politics but one thing I want to say is - Obama, pleaassssse don't turn into a Hugo Chavez. I understand the reasoning behind the weekly YouTube address, but we don't need another 'Alo Presidente'. For now it's all cool and still quite professional, but please continue to keep it that way).

Right, on to the new years resolutions.

      1. Inspired by fellow blogger OJ, I've decided, probably for the 100th time now, to post more on this blog. Starting from today.

      2. Restore the work/life balance in my life. This is not to say I'm not giving it my all at work, but it's about knowing when to draw the line. No point being in NY if I'm not getting to experience life in NY.

      3. Procrastinate less. I'm actually breaking that resolution right now as I'm supposed be packing for my move this Saturday. I'm moving apartments from the Upper East Side of Manhattan to the East Village (further downtown).

      4. Learn to cook. Yes, I do have a few signature dishes - cashew nut chicken, and errr...cashew nut chicken, but I want to develop my menu a little further.

      5. To just get more involved in things! Those who know me well, know I can be extremely lazy, so I need to kick this habit.

      6. Start playing guitar more regularly. After not having played for several months I picked it up again tonight and forgot how much I love it. On that note, here was my initial inspiration.... Mr John Mayer...more his old stuff rather than the new...

I love his song 'Covered in Rain'. It's about life after 911. Enjoy...

      The laundromat

Don't you hate it when you're at the laundromat and someone brings in a tonne of laundry which reeks like bad BO? (hmmm bad BO...I guess there's no other kind). UNlucky for me the laundromat is a long thin building with a small entrance on one side. I am sitting all the way at the back and there is a light breeze blowing past the smelly man and his smelly laundry all the way down the length of the room and into my nose.

You know how sometimes on buses and trains there's a sign which says 'please be considerate and turn your music down'. In New York this needs to extend to people who hum on public transport. There is a lady sitting next to me on the bus right now who is humming so loud I can hear her above the music playing from my iPhone.
