Am usually not a big steak person but as I wake up this morning I am
finding myself craving the tender filet mignon I had last night.

Had dinner with Isabelle and Josh from London last night. The place we
dined at, Smith and Wollensky, was picked out of our New York guide
book but did not disappoint. I thought it would be a little touristy
but aside from a few American flags and buffalo horns adorning the
walls it was ok. Most importantly the food was delicious!!

      Hmmm steak.

      Life...

      Paul Newman died today.

I must admit I knew little about him other than Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and his charitable range of Newman's Own foods. But reading about his life I was deeply moved by this specific statement...

"He is survived by his wife, five children, two grandsons and his older brother Arthur."

...Not just in relation to Paul Newman, but to life itself. The need to pass on one's genes, to continue and exist, even in the tiniest of instances. A biological imperative, a need so strong, to perpetuate oneself over time.

Maybe it's because I turned 30, but I feel this need. And it scares me into thinking what's really important in life. Fuck work - what drives the need to advance one's career? Is it born out of a need for survival, or to prove one's worth? What is worth? What satisfies our own being, not just those who came before us?

I feel the need to advance not just my career, but my own life experience. A round the world trip. A journey of self-discovery and cultural exploration. To see the beauty of the world, untainted by expectation, greed and false promises.

      Stay tuned...

      Olympic closing ceremony

Just finished watching the closing ceremony of the Olympics. Impressive. I've got to say congratulations China for a job well done. Perfectly executed. Who cares about the pre-recorded singing and the CGI, everyone's guilty of that to some degree. Stop trying to pick faults World because China deserves a hats off for what they've achieved.

However, on the other hand, I just saw the 'handover' ceremony to London for 2012 and have to say errr... they have a lot to do in 4 years. Boris Johnson - what an absolute disgrace. He's a joke, and really credit for 2012 should go to Ken Livingstone. And a double decker red bus opening to reveal a grass hedge with the London skyline. Come on! seriously?! Grey umbrellas, punks with pink hair, tossing of newspapers while at the bus stop? grey suits? is that what we have to look forward to? Placing Beckham there - talk about desperate. Jimmy Page rock-miming with Leona Lewis. It felt somewhat juvenile and cliched.

London, I love you, but good luck you're going to need it.

Not this guys lucky day. Came across this freshly hosed down engine in
      the west village.

Its been a week since I got my 2 upper wisdom teeth extracted (both
impacted) and I still feel knackered. Heading home now after a couple
of hours walking around due to lack of energy.

... I bought a ticket to the midnight screening of X-Files: I Want to Believe. hahahaha! yesssssss!

Meeting up with about 10 other Philes in New York for dinner and drinks before hand. I have no idea who these people are (met on an XF forum which I've been surfing for years) but it'd be good to watch the movie with other fans!

It just occurred to me, it's been very quiet in my apartment lately.
Either my noisy but deaf neighbour upstairs has moved or I'm getting
      too acclimatized to the sounds.

I'll have to pay more attention tomorrow. No matter how many times I
hear his fold out sofa bed springing shut ever morning,"boing!!!", I
don't think I'll ever get used to that to the point I don't hear it.
The sound is too jarring and abrupt and the little thumping/springy
sound it makes as it hits the top of my ceiling is unmissable.

Maybe "upstairs neighbor in 4d" has finally moved out? Please...that
      would fantastic!!

      Smells of New York

I mentioned this in my last post but new york weather is weird. I was sitting at my local Starbucks today enjoying an iced caramel macchiato in the 30 degree heat when I felt a big 'plop' on my head. At first I thought it was a dirty pigeon, damn those stinky pigeons, but it was a huge drop of rain. And then another one. And just like that the heavens opened up and the rain fell from the sky like big bits of bird poo. The drops were 'heavy' and huge. Never seen anything like it.

10 min later it was clear skies again. Yes like I said... Weird.

The other thing which is not so weird but rather foul is that after it rains for a short period like that, and especially in this heatwave, the sidewalks start to smell of urine and shit. Dogs (and homeless people) piss and shit all over the footpath so a brief spell of rain is enough to bring it all to the surface again, but not enough to wash it away. Disgusting. Far gone is the lovely smell after the rain which we get in Australia.

      Hi all,

Sorry I've been MIA recently. I'm going to try to update a little more regularly now. I'm off to buy a fan in a sec. The weather here is unbelievably hot and humid. Low 30s at the moment, but there's always this pattern of 3 or 4 hot days followed by 3 or 4 days of thunderstorms.

I really need to get to the beach. We went to one about a month ago on the New Jersey coastline called Sandy Hook. Was brilliant. It took an hour to get there by a speed ferry so it felt like we were far away from the city so could relax a little.

The wind factor should give you an idea how fast we were going:
