... I joined the gym properly for the first time in my life. A years
membership...arrgh. Its still not cheap but definitely cheaper than
London. The plan is not to run so much on treadmills but to take more
group classes. First one on the list is kick boxing (non contact).
      Bring it on.

I can't believe it. It's 10:10pm and I'm lying in bed. This is the
earliest I've been to bed in a very long time. Had a very early start
to the day as had a 9am meeting to get to in Connecticut and just got
back from a marketing conference which MB was a sponsor of.

Although upstairs my noisy deaf neighbour has his tv blaring I don't
think I'll have trouble sleeping tonight.

      The Back Room

I've been meaning to post something about this awesome bar for a while. I was telling some friends about it again last night which has prompted me to write this post today.

I've been to The Back Room 3 times now, and I'm sure I'll be back for many more times to come. I've been told it's owned by Tim Robbins and that sometimes he serves behind the bar, but I've never seen him. But that's not what makes it cool. What makes it cool is that it's a totally hidden bar, modeled on the old Speakeasy hideaways from 1920s America.

On the street level the outside of the 'bar' is called 'The Lower East Side Toy Shop'. To enter, one must descend almost into darkness, down a flight of creaky metal stairs into a dimly lit alley in search of an unmarked black door. It's the sort of place you think nothing of, even to the point when you're knocking on the black door, you hardly expect anyone to answer. But lo and behold someone does. A towering security guard says 'ID please' (you have to be 25 and above) and then the place opens up into a lovely Victoriana type setting, with velvet paisley wallpapers, period chandeliers lit for mood, huge gold framed mirrors and a massive fireplace. Vodka and other spirit based drinks are served in teacups, and beer in paper bags as a salute to Prohibition. There's also a hidden room within, masked outside by an Anne Frank style bookcase. Every now and again you can see waiters making their way in and out, no doubt serving the celebrities and other high rollers as they party behind closed doors.

The only downside to this place, is the price of the drinks. But if you're small like me, you only need a couple and you're set for the night. It's definitely worth checking out...

Ok people - I'm committed to get this blog up and running again. I know I've been extremely slack over the last few months. Honestly it's been a pretty busy time. I think since my last 'real' post, and by 'real' I mean not just random photos and YouTube videos, I've been to Australia and back for my brother's wedding, seen monuments and museums in Washington DC, celebrated my birthday, and made lots of new friends. All this while working 55-70hr weeks. Crazy. On that last point, I don't think the 55-70hr weeks will continue, it was just a busy period we were going through, and really I don't think it CAN continue. It's just not what I'm in NY for.

On that note, stay tuned for more regular updates...

As the pedigree commercials say, "dogs rule".

At the laundromat today this dog was patiently waiting outside for its
      owner. So cute.

      Day of disasters

I had an interesting day today. It started off pretty uneventfully. Nursing a hangover from the night before, I wandered down to my local Starbucks to get a tall skinny peppermint mocha (my current morning beverage of choice) and a hot roast beef and cheese roll with tomato lettuce and mayo. Yum.

It took me a couple of tries to get a cab, but eventually I found one and asked the driver to take me to 55th street and 3rd ave where my work is. Yes it's Saturday but I was going into work to finish a few things off. Along the way, two firetrucks speed past us, along with two ambulances and a tonne of police. The traffic suddenly got really banked up and I could hear a helicopter hovering just above us. Turns out we were just a couple of blocks from this accident:

A massive crane at a building site fell and hit four buildings, killing four people. I was around there about 10 min after it happened. Crazy. On top of destroying residential homes, the crane smashed into a bar called Fu Bar, which we regularly hang out in after work. My workmate's friends girlfriend also lived in the building which got smashed and you can see her pink suitcase in one of the photos on the New York Times website. Photo number 8 here:

      http://www.nytimes.com/slideshow/2008/03/15/nyregion/0315-CRANE_index.html

Luckily they are ok though. Crazy...

When I finally got to work, I almost caused another accident myself. One which totally could have been prevented had I not been hungover and tired from working a 65 hr week. The roast beef sandwich I bought, was given to me wrapped in foil and then put in a brown paper bag. I love my cheese melted, so as soon as I got to work I chucked the whole thing in the microwave, turned my back on it to get a drink and then the next thing I know the microwave is sparking and smoking and the roast beef is up in flames. I'm not talking little flames, I'm talking 'I'm going to blow up BIG nasty flames'. Naturally I was shitting myself. I had a split second to decide - should I risk trying to get it out of the microwave and have the whole thing blow up in my face, or should I just run and have it blow up later. In the fear of burning down the whole building, I lunged at the microwave, pressed the button to open the door and it stopped. But the fire didn't. Frantically I looked around the kitchen and found a pair of plastic salad tongs - thank god - and pulled the burning sandwich onto the floor, where it continued to burn burn burn. Next I got several cups of water and dumped it all over the flames. The whole office stinks of burnt paper/beef/foil... and the microwave is all melted and fu$%*d. oops.. I was really shaken, but not too stirred, as I went on and did about 7 hrs work after that.

WonderCon is an annual comic, sci fi and movie convention.
