pizza?!!! you want pizza? i've got pizza. at first i was pissed off this pizza cost 20 bucks then i realised how big it was. i'm trying to give it some perspective with the beer and TimeOut guide, but it's 18 inches wide.

everything here is twice the size. food portions are ridiculous. i can't finish half of it.

      Media_http4bpblogspot_boztj

believe it or not this is about 1/4 of a pretzel.

      Media_http4bpblogspot_egmja

and this was probably half a litre of beer.

Nahla does New York pt 1

It's been a busy few days! Sorry I've not written for a while, but as many of you know, I had a visitor from London :) We had a wicked time. The theme was shopping and fine dining. Quite civilized really, and a far cry from the endless partying we did in 2004.

      Media_http3bpblogspot_qguen

      It begins...

      Media_http2bpblogspot_iitkl

I don't think I've done this much shopping in my whole life. Here's me looking a bit shocked and overwhelmed by our purchases. I just don't know where Nahla got the energy from. She was a woman on a mission. Bloomingdales was her beacon in the night, Bleecker Street the lost city of Atlantis, and 5th avenue a city of gold. Overall, our favourite shop was Atrium, a mixed bag boutique-y type place with super good taste and very helpful staff.

Highlight: talking Nahla out of buying a $700 jacket.

      to be continued...

      Boston part 2

I realised I never posted a follow-up to my previous Boston post.

About 2 weeks ago I spent a lovely weekend in Boston, catching up with Andy and Dave who flew in from London. In my previous post I talked about the amazing Autumn leaves which I saw from the bus on the way up. A few people have been asking for photos so here they are...bear in mind, these really don't do the leaves justice, but it will give you an idea of how bright and vibrant they were...

It just so happened the weekend were there they were holding the annual Head of the Charles, the world's largest rowing race, so there was a nice buzz to the place. We watched the race for a little and caught up on each other's goss, while I ate my first chowder. Chowder rocks. Interestingly it was also served in a bread bowl (see below), and amazingly the bread held out till the end and it didn't leak through.

My chowder bread bowl! There aren't actually meant to be 2 chunks missing from it. I was just starving having not eaten any breakfast so started chomping into the bread also. It was only after I found out that in order for the bread remain a firm base for the soup, it has to be a little on the stale side.

You can't go to Boston and not visit Harvard, so we did took a gander around the university grounds and observed life as an Ivy Leaguer.

It was also just before Halloween, so there was this awesome pumpkin display in the city to raise money for a children's charity. It was pretty spectacular! There must have been about a 1000 pumpkins, both on the display you see below, but also on the ground. There was also a pumpkin maze!

      Media_http4bpblogspot_dzdfj

      Media_http4bpblogspot_ijjcl

And amidst the 1000s of pumpkins, there was one which stood out from the crowd. Yeah that's right, say my name and say it loud! I didn't carve this by the way, it just happened to be there.

The 2 biggest pumpkins of all

At night we hit a cheesy American bar, which free poured vodka drinks so each glass must have had at least 4 shots in it! Yeowch. It was cheap at the time, but we paid for it the next day,

      Cycling in NYC

Just got back from my first bike ride in NYC! My bike got delivered last Thursday with the rest of my things, but I needed till this weekend to fix it up. Had to re-adjust the brakes as they got knocked around quite a bit on the way over.

I rode to Central Park, hoping to ride on some of the tracks there, but the NYC marathon is on today (which finishes in C.P.) and it was impossible to get through some of the barriers police had set up.

Even though the city is laid out in a grid, it's a bit of a different challenge riding here as opposed to London. The majority of streets are wide, multi-carriage and one-way, and because they're straight, the cars go a lot faster. There aren't many bike lanes or even bus lanes to ride in either, so it's like cycling on a highway.

You ride on the right-hand side, which is fine if you're going straight or turning right, but it's almost impossible to make a left hand turn as you need to cut across 3 or 4 lanes of traffic to do so! There are also no bike 'areas' at the traffic lights - in London there's a bike area which runs parallel to the pedestrian crossing at the lights where at a red light you're meant to pull out and wait in front of the cars so they can see you. There are also less bikes on the roads here which means cars are less familiar with dealing with cyclists.

Unfortunately I can't ride to work, as bikes are not allowed in our building, but this may be a blessing in disguise..

So for now I'm going to keep my cycling to weekends and the bike lanes in the park. hmmph!

The same day I saw the big man, I saw this BIG dog. I mean this dog was seriously the largest dog I've ever seen! It's was bigger than a great dane, both in height and in bone structure. It was like a bear! I felt bad videoing this but I just had to:

I guess you could put it down to Big City weirdness, but I had a 'walking race' with this guy the other day. Look at him, he's a tank. He was at least 6' 5" wearing some kind of army/Hawaiian outfit, with a little black backpack and white 'sneakers'. What the?

Anyway, we didn't speak, or even look each other in the eye, but he just wouldn't let me pass him on the sidewalk. You know when you're walking beside a stranger you usually slow down and let them pass because it's weird to be walking right next to someone you don't know? Well I was coming up from behind him because he was going pretty slow, and every time I tried to overtake, he sped up and wouldn't let me pass. Then he'd slow down again. This happened about 3 or 4 times then I gave up. Weirdo.

Here's a short video from the Village Halloween parade. It's a little hard to see, but there were massive skeleton floats...

We also celebrated Halloween at work and most people dressed up.

This is our little 'cube' area which we decorated with fake cobwebs. There was a competition on the day for best 'cube' which we won. Four of us sit here, and my desk is in the top right of the pic, facing the window.

I am at the Village Halloween Parade. It is INSANE! I've never seen Halloween celebrated with such passion. It's not just about ghosts, goblins and witches, it's about any childhood (or adult) fantasy you've ever had. There are supermen, batmen, spidermen, baseball players, pilots, Marilyn Monroe's, playboy bunnies, red riding hoods, cowboys, doctors, punks and more. Even the dogs are dressed up. Unbelievable!

Along with the cops, the hotdog stalls are also out in full force. Needless to say what I had for dinner...

      Freezing for furniture

This sucks. I'm standing out in the freezing cold in the middle of an IKEA carpark at night in New Jersey waiting for a bus to take me back to New York. I've been on the verge of a cold for a week and this is sure to tip it over.

I had to return to the mother of all home furniture stores to order a few more things. But I think I'm all sorted now and stuff should be delivered in a few weeks.

Damn it's freakin' cold! I'd sit on the bench here apart from the fact that I don't want to get piles. It's made of metal and is colder than ice.

The bus isn't going to get here for another half hour so I'm trying to keep myself entertained, and warm. I tried speaking to the woman next to me but she only speaks Spanish so after a few smiles and a few head nods that 'conversation' died.

Ok my thumbs are almost blue from the cold so I'm going to go because without opposable thumbs we are nothing!
