i have just found the perfect biscuit/cracker/'whatever you want to call it' to accompany cheese... Orkney Oatcakes seriously rock. i can't talk these up enough. if you love cheese, then get some oatcakes to go with it (and no i don't work for Orkney).

      bring on the Stilton...

oh my god i feel like i've got so much to do i don't even know where to start. right, i know i've got to make a list, but it's going to be one hell of a list and that in itself is putting me off.

i shouldn't even be writing this blog post - priorities marie, get them in order. now i'm going crazy talking to myself.

the last few weeks have been pretty crazy - well ever since i got back from NY really, but I'll try to do separate posts to cover everything off. having a pretty lazy day today. i'm recovering, and my stomach too, from our massive cook-up last night. laura came round and we cooked up a storm.

for our main we did this vegetarian dish, which had aubergines, courgettes, red peppers and mushrooms as a base (notice my adept use of British parlance - for those back home i'm sure you've figured out i mean eggplant, zucchini, capsicum and of course mushrooms are mushrooms wherever you are) . this was mingled with a saucey type thing which was made out of celery, tomato paste, garlic, onions, paprika, vegetable stock and pine nuts. yeh. the whole thing went in the oven and to top it off we sprinkled it with grated cheese and basil. it was deee-lishhh!!

for dessert we got slightly adventurous and made passionfruit tarts. mm mmmmm. the recipe for this was meant to cater for 6 people, but we somehow managed to eat it all, so needless to say i'm feeling pretty stuffed today.

      Media_http3bpblogspot_gltfg

unfortunately we weren't that creative and had to follow a recipe book

      Media_http2bpblogspot_bfwes

ok it looks like sick now, but trust me in the end it tasted fabulous

      Rotherhithe Tunnel

omg i just had a bit of an experience. I accidentally took a wrong turn on my bike this afternoon and ended up in the Rotherhithe Tunnel. Not one of my finest moments, and I must admit I was in a bit of a state when I got out the other end. I'd never been in the tunnel before so didn't really appreciate how long it was or how narrow the lanes were. Not only that the air was so hot, humid and stale it was hard to breathe.

For those unfamiliar with the tunnel, it goes under the Thames, connecting the north and south banks of the river. According to Wikipedia, it's 14.5 meters below the high-water level of the river and about 1.5km long. Apparently it's the 10th most dangerous tunnel in all of Europe. Some parts are quite windy and the lanes are only about 2.5 metres wide, making it impossible to overtake, so I was holding up traffic big time. The speed limit was 30km/hr, but I was going that fast, if not faster out of sheer panic. Yikes! Also, the ventilation's so bad in there there are signs instructing cars to turn off their engines if stationary. So basically, I couldn't breathe, had sweat pouring down my face, cars roaring up my arse and on top of all things i was running late. The worst however, was when I got out the other end and realised that I needed to turn around and go back through it, otherwise I'd have to ride a VERY roundabout way to find a bridge to get back across the river to where I'd taken the wrong turn in the first place. Not pleasant at all!!! After I'd gone through for the second time I had to get off my bike for about 5 mins to compose myself. Far out! never doing that again.

Here are a few pics (no i didn't stop and take them - i'm not that crazy, they're from Wikipedia)...

check out how narrow the lanes are. that's one lane for each direction.

John Mayer - Covered in rain

In these days with the world gettin colder
She spends more time sleeping over
      Than I'd planned
      Tonight we're gonna order in
      Drinkin wine and watchin CNN
      It's dark, I know
But then again, it's the brightest thing I've got

When I'm covered in rain, rain
When I'm covered in rain, rain, rain, rain

      From fireworks to fireplaces
      Summer stole what fall replaces
      And now we're people watching
All the people, people watching us right back
      Standing by the missing signs
At the CVS, by the checkout line
She puts her quiet hands in mine,
Cause she's the brightest thing I've got

When I'm covered in rain, rain
When I'm covered in rain, rain, rain, rain
      Oh, I'm covered in rain
      Oh, I'm covered in rain
      Oh, I'm covered in rain

      And come December, Lydia left.
She mentioned something 'bout it being for the best,
And I can't say I disagree, and its killing me.
And now I'm standing facing west
Tracing my fingers round a silhouette
I haven't gotten used to yet,
But it's the brightest thing I've got

      When I'm covered in rain

i'm so addicted to Kettle Sea Salt and Balsamic Vinegar chips right now!! arghhhhh! luckily i'm still riding my bike everyday, otherwise i'd end up the size of a house. actually speaking of err weighty issues, you've probably all gathered i went to NY last week - i've got to say, the average BMI there must be at least 20% higher than it is here. London reckons IT'S got obesity issues, well New York's right up (or should i say out) there too.

one of the 'highlights 'of my recent trip, was going to Coney Island to see Nathan's Annual 4th July Hot Dog Eating Contest. unfortunately the 6 times world champ, Takeru Kobayashi, was suffering from a jaw related injury and came second to the USA's Joey Chesnut. Despite this, Kobayashi ate a whopping 63 hotdogs (including buns) in 12 minutes; Chesnut ate 66.

ok that's pretty impressive don't you think, especially because neither of them were particularly overweight. but what kind of message does this send out to the public? it was a glorification of binge eating - yes, gorge your face and you'll be rewarded - 50,000 Americans turned out to watch the winner claim a $10,000 cash prize and all throughout the 'competition' commentators spouted bullshit about crazy feats of eating, worshiping the 'eaters' as if they were ecclesiastical beings. sorry, no prizes for the other 10 or so contestants apart from perhaps indigestion and an additional 3 inches around the midline...

if you don't believe me, check out this short video clip:

hmmm no comment. well call me hypocritical for being there, but curiosity got the better of me. as i was by myself, i also felt need to 'document' why the glorication of STUFFING your face is not something we should be encouraging in this day and age. the world is experiencing a food crisis at the moment, so say no fat joe.

i'll let my photos do the talking (all taken at the hot dog eating contest):
