      London to Brighton bike

sorry for the lack of updates recently. i've been keeping myself pretty busy, and the further behind i get with this blog, the less i can be bothered doing it! ok ok i know that's not the attitude. afterall, i've got to have something to remember my time in london by...

so what have i been so busy with? cycling i guess. my bike's done quite a few kilometers recently. last weekend i did the london to brighton ride with around 27,000 other cyclists and i've got to say it's one of the coolest things i've ever done in my life! i got such a kick out of it, and it was all for a good cause too. in total i raised about £350 for the British Heart Foundation. Here are a few pics from the day...

      Media_http4bpblogspot_ejjau

it was a 54 mile ride (85km), but including getting to and from the race i think i must have ridden about 65 miles (100km) that day. the above pic shows the 'terrain'. check out the hill at the end. bloody hell! it was just about vertical and almost about everyone got off to push their bike, even some of the more professional riders, but i'm very proud to say i managed to get all the way up it without stopping once. i think it was sheer stubbornness which spurred me on!

      Media_http3bpblogspot_ingfh

i did the ride with kate and hannah, who i met the weekend before on our 30 mile practice ride.

      Media_http4bpblogspot_ncbba

this is one of the 15 official rest stops along the way. each had refreshments, food and toilets - check out all the bananas! we stopped 3 times in total.

      Media_http3bpblogspot_jwdqr

there were 2 very serious accidents along the way which brought things to a standstill. i'm not surprised as some parts were pretty hilly and going downhill we built up a fair bit of speed. at one point i hit 50 miles/78km an hour!!! it's the fastest i've ever gone on my bike. it was exhilarating! the photo above shows how banked up it got after a few accidents. at this point we had been crawling along/almost stationary for about 1hr to allow ambulances and marshals through to attend to people. looking 1/2km into the horizon all i could see was a sea of bikes.

      Media_http2bpblogspot_coarr

the view from the top of that mammoth hill at the end.

Ahh things are pretty cruisey right now...and i do mean that quite literally. I'm currently cruising on a boat down the Vltava River in Prague, drinking beer i didn't even realise was Czech beer!

It was a bank holiday on Monday 7th, so i decided to take full advantage of it and booked the rest of the week off work. so now i've got 6 days and 5 nights in Prague, which is probably a little bit too long, but i'm determined to take things slow - i want this to be a relaxing holiday, hence why i'm on a 3hr boat cruise right now...

the cruise comes complete with a buffet dinner and live jazz. currently, i'm drinking a pint of Staropramen, which when mixed with the spearmint gum i'm chewing tastes strangely vanilla-like.. hmmm.

Wow, the jazz band just kicked off with a pretty unique rendition of U2's 'One'! Nice!

The sun is slowly setting and its orange light is reflected in the windows of town houses sailing by, creating the effect of glowing embers burning within.

They've dimmed the lights now, and lit candles..perfect! This is what i signed on for! if only i had someone to share it with. Although, having said that, I shouldn't complain. Traveling alone does have its benefits. Yes, it can be lonely at times, but in some ways that's a good thing. it helps me focus and appreciate what's really important in life. It makes me contemplate and reflect on why things are the way they are. It's my reality check, it's my discovery time, it helps me grow and makes me humble. yikes, i just re-read that - maybe i've had a few too many beers!

Man, this jazz is good. Smart, sexy and sophisticated. 'Son of a Preacher Man', 'Let it be', 'Blue Suede Shoes' and so many more tunes i recognise but don't know the names of.

note to self - download lots of jazz when you get home.

      Media_http3bpblogspot_iomct

ok so it's a bad photo, but just wanted to illustrate what i meant by the sun's light reflecting off the windows to create an orangy glow...

Well the Rolling Stones are touring again, with a couple of shows coming up in London. I briefly thought perhaps i should go, until i saw the price of the tickets. they're about £400... so about A$1000.

Saul pointed out it's probably because a lot of their fans are baby boomers so their kids are likely to left home now and they've got lots of $$$ to spend. Shame cos i would have really liked to see them! have been getting into a bit of Stones music lately. Sticky Fingers is an awesome album.

      Legoland

It's about 12:30am here so I'll need to make this a short post. Went out for a few drinks tonight with Tania, my new flatmate. I'm moving in to the new flat this weekend. Have hired a 1 tonne van, which Saul kindly offered to drive ;) and Alex and Elaine are coming over to help too. Fingers crossed it all goes smoothly. Haven't done any packing yet...hoping to get most of this done Thurs and Fri night.

As mentioned in my previous post I went to Legoland up in Windsor over the Easter weekend. Although it was really aimed at children, it was worth visiting if just to see the miniature cities of the world section. I thought this was extremely well done. They really managed to capture the essence of each major city with just Lego and the level of detail was phenomenal! We did go on a few kids rides however, and funny enough one of them broke down while we were on it (not because we were too big I swear! but due to a mechanical failure). Laura was also keen on the rollercoaster but I chickened out! haha! When I was young I was pretty excited by rollercoasters but i think I must be getting more *ahem* 'sensible' in my old age. Anyway here's a few pics:

      Media_http1bpblogspot_jpine

      Media_http4bpblogspot_sfdkg

ok at first glance it looks like london, but no (!) it's LEGO :)

      Media_http2bpblogspot_vejeh

There were miniature motorized boats and cars even!

      Media_http3bpblogspot_dewbl

A Lego family - maybe what the Simpsons were based on ;)

      Media_http4bpblogspot_gfkow

What would a trip to Legoland be without fairy floss? Or cotton candy as the Amerians would say.. OR... candy floss as the Brits would say..

      Media_http2bpblogspot_smgix

Laura with our candy floss, which came in a bucket. yes, strange, I know...

      Media_http1bpblogspot_bggin

Choose your own mixed bag of lollies? Nope, look again - you can buy individual Lego blocks to take home. How cool is that?

And I couldn't resist it by the way, so I bought some Lego and a Technics car to build :)

ok this post is dedicated to all you Beatles fans out there... I went to visit Abbey Rd Studios last weekend in the lovely St Johns Wood area. My friend Laura lives out there so gave me a little tour:

      Media_http4bpblogspot_faaal

The Studio - still a popular tourist spot

      Media_http1bpblogspot_mlbzl

      The famous 'crosswalk'

      Media_http4bpblogspot_jvlwc

well... haha - what can i say? I can assure you it is the same crosswalk, just from a different angle. (also it looks like i've cut all my hair off but it's just tied back really!)

Oh and I had this discussion with Annie and Kee when they came to visit London, but Paul really is dead! McCartney that is. Call me paranoid post X-Files but if you don't believe me here's the proof:

ok, so tonight i got to play the client for once - nice! just got back from seeing The Phantom of the Opera, courtesy of the Montague Hotel, a hotel just around the corner from our work who are keen to house our international clients when they're in london. it was a really fun night out. i was a VIP for once and feel totally pampered. We started of with lots of delicious food and champagne at the hotel, then were chaperoned by taxi to Her Majesty's Theatre to see The Phantom.. It's been years since i last saw this. I think the last time i was pretty young, because i must say i appreciated it a lot more this time round. it was absolutely brilliant and engaging, and the music was truly amazing!!!! i think it's time i went to the theatre more often..

      Table Tennis and other things...

sorry for the lack of updates. the last week and a half has been absolutely crazy at work. i've been busy preparing for 3 massive client presentations next week and we just keep winning more and more business but really don't have the capacity to service the demand. there have been lots of new grads joining but obviously it takes time for them to get up to speed. this meant several late nights for me :( but the good thing is that it was recognised and i've been told i'm getting some time off in lieu. I've also been given a free ticket to see The Phantom of the Opera on stage with 7 other colleagues next Wednesday.

well despite busy times at work i've still managed to have a bit of a social life. Alex, Sian and i went for dinner last weekend at our usual curry hole, 'Indian Flavours'. as usual, it did not disappoint and we were left to face the consequences the next day...

i also met up with this guy i met on Gumtree (a UK message board, similar to Craig's List in the US) to play table tennis. it was pretty fun and good to finally make use of my bat, which mum posted over in 2005! for some reason all my friends at work seem to think it's extremely funny that i have my own bat! i'll have to post some pics of our new offices. they're much snazzier now and have large 'break out' areas, which are essentially entertainment areas. here they have make-shift table tennis tables. i say make-shift because they are basically the tables we eat on, which are roughly the same size, and we've just put a net on it. either way, it's good fun and a way to de-stress eg. last week, laura and i stayed playing table tennis till 1am, after finishing work at 11pm.

      Media_http4bpblogspot_wvzii

anyway i think that's all i have to report for now. i plan to have a fairly quiet weekend doing lots of reading and hopefully getting a bit of guitar in there too. oh in terms of house hunting, there is a possibility i may be moving in with a friend of a friend who owns a flat in London Bridge. it will be much closer to work and the city, which at first i was a little hesitant about as i like all the greenary where i am at the moment, but i figure on the weekends if i really want to go to a park i can always make the trip out. will keep you posted.. am meeting with this friend of a friend tomorrow evening for a few drinks.
