      Valentino: The Last Emperor

I would highly recommend "Valentino: The Last Emperor". It gave an interesting insight into the world of fashion and life of legendary designer Valentino. I'm not usually into things like this, but I've got to say it intrigued me. What an amazing career.

We saw the documentary at Angelika Cinema in New York, which in it of itself was a great find. Lots of independent flicks showing here. Here's what they have to say about the film:

"Critics and audiences around the world are raving about this behind-the-scenes look at the life of legendary designer Valentino, and his longtime partner, Giancarlo Giammetti. The film follows these two men for the last two years of their careers, and shows the struggles they face as they confront the final act of a nearly 50-year career at the top of the fashion world. The struggle of art against commerce is at the center of the film. In the end, however, the story proves to be not one about money or expensive clothes, but about love."

French restaurant and another hidden bar!

A couple of other good finds. A french restaurant called Casimir, which is named after a children's character. They do a really good Fillet Mignon here...

...and another hidden bar called Angel's Share. If you go to the address listed in Yelp it actually looks like boarded up construction site with a padlock/chain on the makeshift door. We almost left but then looking up we could see people sitting in the window above the 'construction' site. So we took a chance and entered the Japanese restaurant next door and asked a waiter. He immediately made a hand gesture toward a plain red door within their restaurant. Very cool. It had a bit of PDT feel... there was a Raffaello-Sistine-Chapel-Cherub style mural hanging over the bar but the interesting thing was that it had a Japanese Cherub in the center of it. Would definitely go back...had an interesting list of original cocktails too. I tried one called Serenity which had lychee in it and 'dragon tears' (?)... it was delicious.

More East Village goodness - 6BC garden

Had a lovely 4th July in the East Village. I found this awesome community garden called 6BC (6th street between Ave B and C). There are a lot of gardens like this dotted around the city but this is probably the nicest I've come across (some others are rather freaky - overgrown and fully of stuffed animals - eww). It seemed well thought out with a variety of plants/flowers and a solar powered koi pond... check it out... I spent a couple of hours reading there.

To follow-up on my previous post the winner of the 2009 Nathan's International July Fourth Hot Dog Eating Contest was again Joey Chestnut from the US of A, eating a record 68 dogs... ughhh.

I'm pretty sure the guy sitting next to me at Starbucks just left, but
he left this note behind. Weird.

It's the 4th July today so naturally I'm thinking about America's Independence from the British, and of course of hotdogs. Today is also the 93rd annual Nathan's International July Fourth Hot Dog Eating Contest. I went a couple of years ago to see defending champion, Takeru Kobayashi, lose out to America's Joey Chestnut. Needless to say it was a big day for America. Joey won it again last year, so lets see if Kobayashi can pull out any surprises today.

      iPhone 2g

Sold my iPhone 2g for US$270 to some random guy on the street! It was weird how it went down. Initially I had gone into a 2nd hand electronics shop and they had offered me $270 but when I brought the phone back they said they could only give me $212. Naturally I was pissed, having traveled a fair way to go get the phone and bring it back to the store.

There was not much I could do, and I basically just wanted to get rid of it for cash so I agreed to the $212 and the store took the phone in for testing. They told me to come back in 30 min while they tested and then they'd give me the cash. After I left the store some random guy said something to me on the street and I just said 'No thanks' and walked on. I thought he was trying to sell me something. I hadn't noticed him in the store but he apparently overheard the conversation and said 'No, I want to buy your phone'. So it was a bit of a win/win. If this guy had bought the phone though the shop they would have charged him $400+, and I managed to sell it to him for $270.

Bye bye 2g iPhone. I will miss you.

Everywhere we went on the weekend, Michael Jackson was present. His music was playing in almost every bar, cars driving past were pumping his tunes, and I came across this tribute graffiti on a wall in Soho.

      RIP MJ.

A fun weekend hanging around the West Village with the Frenchies. No French food, but we did come across a little slice of British heaven - two restaurants, side by side, same owner. We ate at both. Definitely worth noting and will definitely return. For lunch try fish and chip shop "A Salt and Battery" - voted best fish and chip shop by New York Magazine. I also think it wins points for its name. For a dinner in true British style, try "Tea and Sympathy"...amazing food in a quaint little setting.
