      Chilled day

Had a near perfect day today. Started off with a massage at my local Chinese place. It looks completely dodgy from the outside with its neon blue lighting but it's cheap $50/hr and the quality is ok (as long as you don't mind hearing people whispering occasionally in the next room or talking as they come into the place. There are walls but they're more like dividers and don't hit the ceiling. Not very soundproof).

Then it was off to my local Starbucks for a bit of chilling and winding down from the massage. I'm still ordering the same drink as a year ago. A tall skim no whip peppermint mocha. hmmm hmmm.

Oh did I mention I had my scooter? I've been using this to get around the East Village a lot. It's perfect as the places I like to go feel a little out of walking distance (by my standards, but I'm lazy) and a little too close to go to the hassle of getting the bike out, so a scooter is perfect. It's a kick scooter too (ie no motor) so it folds away nicely and I can carry it on my shoulder when I go into shops.

Next I went to Best Buy and picked up the camera I've been waiting months for. The Canon SD780is. Finally. Initially I was going to get it in black but they only had red in stock. Ended up getting the red and am totally stoked I did. Love it.

And to top the day off, I gorged on the most delicious fries in NYC, at the one and only Pom Frites. Belgium-style, double fried. Yess!

      St Paddys day celebrations

It's been a busy and tiring week with St Paddy's day celebrations.

Actually it started last weekend with a roof top party on Park Ave. When I first got the invite, the apartment number said PH2c and for a moment I was confused. What the hell is PH? Then I realized, it was the penthouse. It all went downhill from there. haha.

This is one of my favorite pics. Deepa is all pretty poses and Chris and I are clowning around :)

      Media_http3bpblogspot_zecfq

Then there was more mayhem on St Paddy's day itself with a work team outing. We did a bit of a pub/bar crawl around the East Village. All the bars were really cool, but I think the one which stood out for me was PDT. It stands for 'Please don't tell' and is an old style speakeasy.

So what was so cool about it? Firstly, the fact that it was by appointment only and you could only book (or try to book) by calling a number at 3pm on the day itself. We must have dialed about 20 times before we got through and were able to make a booking. Secondly, the entrance to the bar was through a phone booth hidden in the corner of a hot dog shop. So you entered through a crappy run down hot dog shop, went into the phone booth, picked up the phone and voila, a secret door opened and you entered the hidden bar.

Inside it was all class. Dimly lit, soft jazz, absolutely no phones or flash photography and just a really chilled vibe. The only thing I didn't like was that they had stuffed animals on the wall. Who knows if they were real or not. I thought some were fake but my friends swear they looked real. Anyway, some pics from the night... :)

Went dog walking yesterday :) A friend of mine was dog sitting for
      another friend.

It gave me a little taste of how difficult, and what a huge
committment it is to have a dog in New York. We had to walk it in the
morning so it could do a poo in the park and then leave a party later
in the night to go back and feed it and walk it again.

Lovely dog though. Reminds me of my first ever dog, Chloe, who was a
      German Shepherd too.

Saw this story on Engadget and had to share... this is exactly what I need. A toothbrush which has an indented back which deflects water. Instant water fountain, no more cups.

Thought I'd test out my new wok and rice cooker :) chicken stir fry with red peppers, mushrooms, spring onions and oyster and soy sauce. An oldie but a goodie. One of the first things mum taught me to cook.

I got a mini hair straightener today! Why you might ask? Well it's
really good on short hair, not for straightening but for curling/
flicking your hair out. Funky style.

It came with the usual warnings eg -"if appliance falls into
water unplug immediately" and "do not place appliance where it can fall or be pulled into a bathtub". But also had some unusual winners
      such as...

"Never use while sleeping" - nice.

"Do not let eyes or bare skin touch heated surfaces" - great tip!

"Never drop or insert any object into any opening" - errr, what? I'm not sure what "opening" they're talking about.

      Flatbush, Brooklyn

I was visiting a friend in Flatbush, Brooklyn today. It's a pretty interesting neighbourhood. I'd say 95% of the community is black - has a very Jamaican feel to it. All the hairdressers advertised hairstyles for black people and even the manikins in the shop window were black!
